Most Lakeview residents responding to a survey about the viability of their
neighborhood after Hurricane Katrina say they plan to return and repair their
flood-damaged homes.
Of 7,360 households surveyed, 2,023, or 26 percent, returned the questionnaire
that was taped to the doorways of devastated houses, said Glenn Stoudt, a
Lakeview Civic Improvement Association board member.
Of the survey respondents, 1,483, or 73 percent, said they will return to Lakeview.
"It's a very encouraging statistic," Stoudt said. The survey indicates that Lakeview residents "are holding on to their property and are buying into the future viability of Lakeview."
Lakeview is part of the 5th District in the city planning initiative. The survey, designed to gauge the plans of displaced property owners, is being conducted by the 5th District Neighborhood Recovery Committee and distributed in other 5th District neighborhoods, including Lake Vista, Lakeshore, Lakewood, Country Club Estates, Parkview and City Park.
Stoudt said the results of other 5th District neighborhoods will be released at a Lakeview Civic Improvement Association meeting Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Mount Carmel Academy's cafeteria, 7027 Milne Blvd.
Of Lakeview survey respondents who said they are returning, 53 percent said they are repairing their houses, 25 percent said they plan to demolish and rebuild, and 22 percent said they were not certain about how they will restore their property.
Of those who said they might return, 40 percent said they plan to hold on to their property, 15 percent said they are thinking about selling, 1 percent said they will rent and 43 percent said they are uncertain about what to do.
Of those who said they will not return, 11 percent said they will hold on to their property, 22 percent said they plan to sell and 67 percent said they are undecided about what to do with their property.
Stoudt said the survey indicates that Lakeview "is a community that will be rebuilt."
